A Note from the author
When the Relax The Back® store in Chicago asked me to write this book, I enthusiastically responded. Countless physical therapists and Practitioners of the Feldenkrais Method ® of Somatic Education, myself included, are using Styrofoam™ rollers as a therapeutic tool to speed the recovery of those with various back and leg conditions. Nowhere through these pages are you encouraged to use the roller to force improvement. Instead, approach every exercise with a sense of exploration each and every time you use your roller.
You'll discover that being more gentle with yourself will exponentially fast-forward your return to comfort.

About the Author
For thirty years Pamela Kihm has been motivating her clients to choose more healthful movement options. Pamela's background includes a degree in Behavioral Science and certification for Therapeutic Touch. In 1977 she was one of the first advocates of low-impact aerobics, choreographing routines to help her students reach aerobic levels without causing joint damage.
Relax Your Back With A Roller is based on Pamela's experience helping clients since graduating from the 1000+ hour Feldenkrais Method® of Somatic Education training in 1991.
In her private practice as a Guild Certified Feldenkrais Method® of Somatic Education Practitioner and exercise trainer for people with challenges, Pamela doesn't Just ameliorate symptoms of pain. She helps clients learn how they can move in ways that are more efficient, ways of moving that cause less wear and tear through their joints. Frequently her clients find that subtle modifications to regimens prescribed by the medical community make those exercises noticeably less painful and markedly more effective.
Pamela's books are based on the Feldenkrais Method® of Somatic Education developed by Moshe Feldenkrais Dsc. Dr. Feldenkrais was a genius at understanding and teaching “skeletal engineering.” For example when your skeleton is well organized, your muscles don't have to work as hard to keep you upright. As a result movement is more comfortable and, even more importantly, more effective.

The Method
| The Feldenkrais Method® of Somatic Education and “skeletal engineering” are the foundations of Relax Your Back With A Roller . |
I have long been intrigued by this subtle form of retraining the nervous system, which I currently recommend to patients whose movement has been restricted by injury, cerebral palsy, stroke, fibromyalgia, or chronic pain....I also believe that the Feldenkrais Method can help older people achieve greater range of motion and flexibility, and help all of us feel more comfortable in our bodies.

After years of trying to move through an active life in spite of severe knee pain, doctors informed Moshe Feldenkrais that surgery might help him. However doctors admitted that there was only a 50% chance his pain would be eliminated. They also admitted that the surgery might cause him to lose some of his mobility. This was the 1940's, twenty-some years after he had torn his knee at a right angle playing soccer while at Sorbonne University in France earning his engineering degree.
Instead of having the surgery, or continuing to force himself through pain, Dr. Feldenkrais zeroed in what he was doing differently when the pain wasn't as severe. He applied engineering principles to his own body. Those around him couldn't help but notice his improved movement and lack of pain. As he helped others, the Feldenkrais Method® of Somatic Education developed. He began training assistants to accommodate the large number of people coming to him for help. Now there are over 3,000 Feldenkrais Practitioners worldwide. Click www.feldenkrais.com to find a Feldenkrais Practitioner near you.

“Many members of the medical community have seen the value of this method in improving their patients' lives and sometimes the underlying medical condition.”
